How to read these figures

These are self-reported survey results. They describe what people say they believe or practice, not whether any spiritual or complementary practice produces a particular outcome.

The spiritual belief and identity findings come from Pew Research Center’s national surveys of U.S. adults. The complementary-practice findings come from the National Health Interview Survey, reported by the National Institutes of Health.

For the original reporting and survey context, see Pew Research Center’s 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study, Pew’s spirituality survey, and the National Institutes of Health analysis of 2022 survey data.
